Sanitago de Camasella

Trip to St James tomb was interesting. A very different sort of religious space. Almost the religious equivelent of a theme park. Each "chapel" a zone for a different place of heart. And scattered throughout are the tombs of dead bishops and/or saints.
Of course it is now but a ghost of what it once must have been. The incense burner is burnished brass the size of a washing machine. In times of high service it was lifted high into the vault where they calculate it reaches speeds of 60km/h! As it zoomed overhead trailing clouds of incense. Once a thousand smelly pilgrims would have stood awed below the swirling fire of the insense burner; pressed between the columns of the huge pipe organ as a myriad candles glinted off the burnished gold seraphim above the alter.

Eager for absolution the pigrims would have queued beside the 20 confessionals to be released from their guilt.

I trudged out into the rain.... Would like to visit again in the sunshine and stay a little longer in the markets and trinket shops.
